Family Visits

All members of Poder Joven have committed themselves to serve children and their families under any circumstance. In order to make this possible during the pandemic, we have been coming to the children’s homes to provide psychological support and advisory to prevent family violence. Poder Joven’s presence has given children a sense of security and optimism the amidst adverse conditions.

Individualized academic support

Federal regulations mandate the remaining of 2020 to be online for all academic institutions in Colombia. This is not a viable option for the children that we serve because they do not have access to computers or internet in their homes. Recognizing this reality, many teachers have distributed printed material for children to work on their own at home. However, because parents are uneducated and spend their time finding ways to support their families, Poder Joven has become instrumental for the children to keep up with the academic curriculum.

Grocery distribution and community kitchen

Mandatory lock-down orders from the federal government has made it impossible for the families we serve to meet their basic needs. This is because most parents have informal jobs (from selling candies to recycling) in the streets of Medellin on a day-to-day basis. To help alleviate their distress, Poder Joven has been purchasing bulk food to distribute basic groceries for families and to open a community kitchen where lunch is provided every day. This has enabled families to use their limited resources for paying rent and utility bills.

Poder Joven is committed to support the children we serve and their families. We are confident that conditions will improve and that we will have the opportunity to further serve with all our love.

DIGITAL NEWSLETTER – APRIL 2026

At Poder Joven, we seek the holistic well-being of our children; for this reason, we offer them activities designed to develop their cognitive and social skills. However, the nutritional support we provide daily is no less important. At our facilities, we serve a total of 230 meals per day (5,060 full meals each month). This nutritional support enables our kids to enjoy the activities we offer and helps them concentrate more easily during the academic reinforcement sessions.

In the month of May, we invited the children’s families to enjoy a joyful afternoon of music, prizes, and fun. We know how important it is to work closely with the children’s immediate families, as this is where the learning and behaviors originate. For this reason, we strive to educate parents about the need to serve as positive role models for the proper development of their children’s personalities.
