Digital Newsletter – December 2022
In October we took a group of children and adolescents served by the foundation to visit the University of Antioquia (a well-established university in Medellin). Our goal is that kids can understand that after completing their primary and high school studies, they can access higher education, as long as they make an effort to excel academically. At Poder Joven we are convinced that this type of activity allows children to begin visualizing their future and set goals to achieve in the long term.

During the month of May we took the children to several Parks in the city of Medellin. We played games and conducted other educational activities through art. The children were asked to express their feelings about their current conditions in life through their artwork. The activity helped us identify the most important and urgent needs of the children.

During March children served by Poder Joven conducted fundraising activities to help underprivileged elderly from a local nursing home. Four of the children personally went and delivered some goods to the elder. It was a beautiful exchange where children listened to life stories and received valuable advice about the importance of education as the best way to improve their lives.

In September we had a day-long picnic with 36 families of the children from the Casa Karah program. This was an unforgettable experience to connect and create a sense of community. In addition to enjoying great food, we played games and relaxed in one of the ecological parks of the city. Children and their parents had a great time together with her friends and we felt privileged to witness kinship.

Realizing that family members and guardians are most influential to children’s development, one of the priorities of Poder Joven Foundation is providing advisory and support to all families of the children we serve. During these visits we discuss moral principles, family values, communication strategies, nutritional needs, and management of family budgets.

During the month of February, Poder Joven partnered with the Manrique community police on a campaign to create awareness about drug use. Through educational activities and games, children learned about the negative outcomes of drug use and the importance of avoiding interactions with gangs from the neighborhood.

During December —like the rest of the year—we did special activities with the children at their own homes. In the wake of social distancing requirements, it has been our goal to make sure that the children served by Poder Joven can feel the support of our foundation, and this was particularly important during the Christmas season. One activity consisted of bringing each child Christmas cookies along with ingredients for decorating them. We continued providing families with basic groceries regularly and served over 1,000 lunches for members of the community every month.

All members of Poder Joven have committed themselves to serve children and their families under any circumstance. In order to make this possible during the pandemic, we have been coming to the children’s homes to provide psychological support and advisory to prevent family violence. Poder Joven’s presence has given children a sense of security and optimism the amidst adverse conditions.

We handed 130 school kits in January to ensure that the children we serve have all the supplies they need to succeed during this academic year. This is just part of the support Poder Joven provides throughout the year with tutoring and supplementary academic activities that strengthen the kid’s performance at school.

Teenagers in our program received basic Barber training during the second semester of the year. The goal is to provide these young people with means to provide financial support to themselves in the future. All students were highly motivated and learned many haircutting and techniques put to test with family and friends!
